Two nice cumbia bands, each impressed by magic mushrooms and each free within the Ajijic Plaza. I like Mexico’s help for music

Mexican Cumbia Saturday evening within the Plaza with magic mushroom bands

It was  a cumbia Saturday for me.  Since going to Coachella was a bit past my commute restrict, to not point out getting by the border which apparently some bands couldn’t do, I feasted on two excellent cumbia bands within the Ajijic Plaza. Each bands have been free and have been impressed by magic mushrooms.

First a phrase about cumbia and music in Mexican tradition (I’ll allow you to analysis magic mushrooms by yourself).

Cumbia is scorching, notably in the US. Artists like Los Ángeles Azul have tens of millions of month-to-month Spotify listeners. Their hits, corresponding to “Como Te Voy a Olvidar” (317 million streams) and “El Listón de Tu Pelo” (273 million streams), have gained traction in Mexico, the US, and Latin America. Different bands like Peru’s Los Mirlos have launched  psychedelic cumbia, a part of a “cumbia renaissance.  It appears everyone seems to be  adapting cumbia into cumbia sonidera and cumbia villera, delivering viral hits like Ke Personajes’ “Un Finde” reaching practically 340 million Spotify streams and showing in over 700,000 TikTok posts.

So I used to be prepared for cumbia, together with apparently the remainder of the world, particularly Mexico, particularly right here in Jalisco state.  In contrast to the US, the Mexican  authorities loves music and exhibits that love with cash. The Ministry of Tradition in Jalisco is pending $245 million USD to place  music school rooms and  devices into  public colleges. What an idea! Extra to the purpose it pays for bands –grants to native municipalities to herald bands without spending a dime public live shows. It additionally gives cash to bands and helps excursions, which is the place I used to be Saturday evening at a free live performance by the psychedelic cumbia band,  Los Curanderos del Sabor.  They usually have been rocking. And so was the Chapala Director of Tradition who paid for it out of his price range.

Los Curanderos del Sabor is 5 very gifted guys in white-framed  sun shades who mixed conventional cumbia rhythms with trendy tropical influences, congas, cowbells, electronics  into what they name psychotropical cumbia – therefore the hallucinogenic mushrooms of their emblem – and bizarre pre-recorded sound results and trippy pre-recorded vocals. Everybody liked it and did what individuals do with cumbia,  they danced.  Everybody from the previous abuelas to the younger kids and even a few canines have been up dancing within the plaza. No mushrooms, however enjoyable.

I particularly liked the “tropical” in psychotropical.  The drummer, who was working a full drum equipment and a big conga, wove the tropical, Cuban-like sounds into the dance beat after which hit you within the intestine with cowbells (by no means sufficient cowbells). It was dance ‘until you drop music.

They packed up at a really un-Mexican  8:30 pm (children right here go to mattress at 11 p.m. or later and events go till 3 or am) so we moved throughout the plaza to The Ajijic Spot, and indoor-outdoor venue for a variety of music. The out of doors tables have been full, however we managed to snag one in entrance of the adjoining  churro store run by one among my neighbors.

The band was a sax-led semitropical (with an amazing conga participant) cumbia band, Los Ninos Santos de Maria Sabina (“The Holly Kids of Maria Sabina”). Maria Sabina was Mazatec healer and shaman initially from the state of Oaxaca who pioneered using magic mushrooms in therapeutic.  She referred to as them her “Holy Kids” , the origin of the band’s identify. They usually (the band, not mushrooms) have been good, though nobody gave the impression to be hallucinating.  A sax-led cumbia band blends a bit little bit of jazz into the beat giving it a complicated really feel, as they musicians moved  alongside. And the gang sitting at tables in entrance of the restaurant, the gang sitting on benches throughout from the ban, and even mother’s holding infants  have been bouncing to the beat.

Each bands have been native; you gained’t discover them on-line besides  Fb. Los Curanderos del Sabor has a few YouTube movies up, however not Los Ninos Santos de Maria Sabina, which is just too unhealthy as a result of their music is so good.  However given the rise of cumbia, it will not be lengthy. And there’ll at all times be mushrooms.
