SHOSTAKOVICHFEST: a vibrant tribute to a musical insurgent is the subsequent live performance for OPUS Chamber Music, offered in partnership with The Canadian Chamber Orchestra. The live performance celebrating the groundbreaking music of the Russian composer and pianist takes place on February 2.

A composer born into the Soviet period, Shostakovich had an advanced relationship along with his authorities, which swung between endorsing and condemning his work. He used each conventional and trendy compositional strategies, and lined a variety of feelings in his work. In his life and profession, he walked a advantageous line between with the ability to work freely as a composer and critiquing and condemning the Soviet regime.

The All-Shostakovich Program

This system covers music from varied elements of his profession from the Twenties to the Nineteen Sixties, together with:

  • Two Waltzes
  • Octet
  • Piano Concerto No. 1
  • Duo for Two Violins
  • Chamber Symphony, Op. 110A
  • Alternatives from The Gadfly

The composer himself carried out on the premiere of his Piano Concerto no. 1 on October 15, 1933 with the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra. Whereas it’s technically a piano concerto, it’s typically mentioned as a sort of double concerto in that the trumpet has an equally outstanding function within the rating.

Shostakovich wrote the rating for the 1955 Soviet movie The Gadfly. It was primarily based on a novel of the identical title by Ethel Lilian Voynich. The Gadfly Suite, Op. 97A is an association of the music into an orchestral suite by fellow Russian composer Levon Atovmyan.

Canadian Chamber Orchestra

The CCO is a self-directed chamber ensemble with a mission to “broadening the visibility and affect of Canadian musicians, composers, and artists inside Canada, and on the worldwide stage”. They’re seeking to create dynamic experiences for audiences.
