Dan’s Girlfriend: Skipping Beats – Single Assessment
Self-released
Out 17/01/24
Indie rock band Dan’s Girlfriend galloped into ears in late 2024 with a flurry of stay exhibits and the discharge of Heartbreaker, their debut single. They carried out at Sure, Manchester; Challenge Home, Leeds; and Parish, Huddersfield.
They’re a saxophone, vocals and guitar-toting group, balancing tacky pop anthems with gritty instrumentation – alongside a mode that might solely originate from West Yorkshire, and experiences in metallic and jazz bands like Afflecks Palace, Ubunye, and Deadset Dream.
Alongside the debut single’s evocation of Blondie and jazz-funk a la Kool and the Gang, this second outing presents parts harking back to extra fashionable acts like indie sleaze figureheads and one-hit wonders The Ting Tings.
Just like this effortlessly enjoyable sonic mix, the staccato, rhythmic skatting bleeds into the standard vocals with fiendish aptitude. The equally stuttering saxophone is stronger right here. It’s a rapid-fire combo of heady, punchy and wondrously melodic types – echoing each Eurovision’s Epic Sax Man and jazz greats. On Skipping Beats, the second single, they mix these indie-rock and jazz influences majestically. This heady cocktail is the best mixture for its frenetic show of the anxiousness of the primary flushes of romance, brewed in addition to any of your favoured indie sleaze legends.
Dan’s Girlfriend will launch their debut album, entitled Killing Time, later this 12 months.
